Cathedral Church of St. Mary’s,
Newcastle.
Memorial Window
For the first time in over 100 years St. Mary’s
cathedral has a new stained glass window which was dedicated on June
27th in memory of Private Adam Wakenshaw V.C.
This was the 62nd anniversary of Private Wakenshaw’s death in a battle
at Mersa Matruh in the Western Desert. Cate was selected by public competition
organised by Arts Council North East to design and make the window which
comprises 2 panels each 8 feet high by 2 feet wide.
The window commemorates the valour and self sacrifice of the only soldier
from Tyneside to be awarded the Victoria Cross in World War 2.
