Wakenshaw Memorial Window

Cathedral Church of St Mary, Newcastle upon Tyne.

This two light window in the south aisle of the church is the first window to be commissioned in the Pugin designed cathedral for over 100 years. The design of the window not only has a strong visual impact but, most importantly, tells the story of Adam Wakenshaw, a local man, from his humble beginnings in Newcastle to his death, as a soldier in the Second World War, in the deserts of North Africa. The window celebrates his life and his sacrifice.

The brief required the window to commemorate the life and death of Adam Wakenshaw in the context of the cathedral church. The window expresses the themes of the city and the cathedral, the poverty and hardship he suffered in his youth, the Regimental symbols of the Durham Light Infantry, the Egyptian desert in which he fought. The scene of his death and his burial and the Victoria Cross.
